Regional and Multilateral

The Pacific and international bodies the Cook Islands takes part in.

The Cook Islands works with its neighbours on climate change, disaster resilience, ocean governance and economic vulnerability.

Where we take part

  • Pacific Islands Forum. The Cook Islands chaired the Forum in 2023.
  • The Pacific Community (SPC) and the other agencies of the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific.
  • Pacific Immigration Development Community. Regional cooperation between immigration agencies.
  • The United Nations and its specialised agencies, including UNESCO, where the Cook Islands maintains diplomatic representation in Paris, and the International Maritime Organization in London.
  • Multilateral development banks and international financial institutions, where decisions on climate finance, debt sustainability and innovative financing are made.

What we argue for

A Pacific-led regional architecture that delivers the collective priorities in the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. Respect for Pacific sovereignty and regional solidarity, while engaging with partners from outside the region.

The Ministry leads advocacy for Smaller Island States, and is working towards full membership of the international organisations the Cook Islands has not yet joined.
